Holidays & Observances: Summer Solstice

For all the posts in this Holidays & Observances series, go here.

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. šŸ™‚

The first day of summer or Summer Solstice happens every year either on June 20th or 21st (It was on 21st in 2023) and celebrated globally in the Northern Hemisphere. Sun begins its journey along its northernmost path in the sky. In Indian astronomy it is called the beginning of Uttarayanam (= journey towards the north).

This is the day summer officially begins with days being longer and nights being shorter. Enjoy the day by waking up early to welcome the sun, eating some fresh strawberries, a bonfire in the evening and may be have an outdoor picnic watching the sunset.
