Holidays & Observances: International Yoga Day

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. πŸ™‚

Celebrated on June 21st of every year, this year International Yoga Day coincided with the Summer Solstice as well. The day celebrates the physical, mental and spiritual power that Yoga brings to one. Also it promotes to be active and healthy by simply moving using these simple techniques, a practice that has been since 5000 years in India.

The idea of International Yoga Day was first proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, where a resolution to establish June 21 as International Yoga Day was introduced by India’s Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji.

At Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India, we get to see this sculpture work depicting the various poses that encompass Surya Namaskar (= Sun Salutation).
