Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. š
On the day Hindus celebrated Devashayani Ekadasi, Muslims all over the world celebrated Bakrid or Eid al-Adha on 29th of June this year. They start the day with their daily prayers or Namaz. The festival literally means Goat Festival, and a lot of Goats are sacrificed on this day.
This stems from the story in Quran, where Prophet Ibrahim follows God’s instructions and willingly goes ahead to kill his beloved son, Ismail (Ishmael). Just before Ibrahim carries out the sacrifice, God exchanges Ismail with a goat to be killed in his stead. Everyone enjoy walking down the streets, eating delicacies and exchanging gifts with loved ones.
