Holidays & Observances: Onam

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. šŸ™‚

This is the annual harvest and cultural festival followed by Hindus who hail predominantly from the state of Kerala in India. This festival is celebrated by Keralites in remembrance of the good governance under the rule of daitya king Mahabali, a mythical king.

This is a 10 day festival that peaks on the 7th day of the event. This year it was from Aug 20th to Aug 30th with Aug 27th being the peak day. People decorate their houses with flower arrangements all over also known as Pookalam. Then it is followed by an elaborate meal called as Onam Sadhya (= Onam feast) that usually occurs on the last day on the festival. There are usually 11 essential dishes prepared in traditional Kerala style cuisine.

We attended Onam Sandhya at my dear friend’s home this year. It was a very humble and honorable event since she did this specially for me. I wore the Onam saree for the occasion. Here is me with the elaborate flower decoration.

And my parents and me enjoying the Onam Sadhya. My friend made 21 dishes this year.
