Holidays & Observances: Tadiya Gouri Nomu

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. šŸ™‚

The 10 day festival celebrating Lord Ganesh began this year on Sept 17th (2023) with Tadiya Gouri Nomu (= Goddess Gouri Pooja Ritual). This is a tradition that is being handed down generations as a tradition in most families that come from Telugu speaking regions in India (the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh). It is performed for the health, longevity, happiness and prosperity of one’s family.

The flowers and leaves used for the pooja, the offerings to Goddess Gouri are all in the number of 16. We use 16 leaves of Uttareni plant (= Achyranthes aspera) to make the turmeric thread roll to tie around the wrist of the female persons in the family. We try to get at least 16 varieties of flowers to offer to Goddess; and make 16 Kudumulu (= steamed balls or flat patties made of rice flour) to offer as prasadam.

It’s a bit elaborate process but a fun and happy one to follow. This year mom was here so she performed the ritual.
