Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. š
The 10th day of the Ganesh Festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha culminates in immersing of the idol in water. The festival is also known as Ganesh Visarjan. This year the event happened o Sept 28th (2023), although devotees do the Visarjan on the 3rd day, 5th day and 7th day too.
To keep it eco friendly and avoid water pollution with plaster of paris Ganeshas or other metals, in past decade or so more clay Ganeshas are being encouraged and other eco-friendly materials to use to construct them. We did our Ganesh Nimajjanam on the third day in my home in a small bucket of water. My Ganesha is made of Brass so I reuse the idol every year.
