Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. š
The 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is annually celebrated on October 2nd fondly called as Gandhi Jayanthi. It is universally celebrated as International Day of Non-Violence. Subahs Chandra Bose first called Gandhi as Father of The Nation. Gandhi promoted and practiced the philosophy of non-violent resistance.
On this day awards are granted for projects in schools and the community encouraging a nonviolent way of life as well as celebrating Gandhi’s effort in the Indian independence movement.[3] Gandhi’s favorite Bhajan (Hindu devotional song), Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram, is usually sung in his memory.
