Holidays & Observances: Maharnavami / Maha Navami

For all the posts in this Holidays & Observances series, go here.

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. πŸ™‚

The ninth day of Dusshera is Maha Navami or Maharnavami. Ayudha Puja (= worshipping of weapons) is key on this day, although we don’t have weapons anymore to worship. Rather we celebrate all modes of transportations and implements used in one’s daily work or their businesses.

Goddess Durga’s avatar of Siddhidhatri is worshipped today and is believed to bestow all kinds of siddhis on the followers. This year this event was on Oct 23rd (2023). Here are the Durga idols from one of the temples here.
