Holidays & Observances: Day of the Dead

For all the posts in this Holidays & Observances series, go here.

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. šŸ™‚

This is a traditional Mexican Holiday that was on Nov 1st and ends on Nov 2nd this year (2023). It’s a holiday that celebrates both death and life, a unique event that exchanges mourning with remembrance. Decorative skulls aka Calaveras made of sugar or clay are used in this celebration, often depicting smiles as to laugh at death itself.

Other festivities include decorating with marigolds, a feast of offerings dedicated to the person being remembered, and dance and sing in the name of that person thus celebrating their life than mourning their death.

Here is a day of the dead headband I wore for last Halloween, although Day of the Dead is NOT a Mexican Halloween Day. šŸ˜›
