Holidays & Observances: Dhanteras

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. šŸ™‚

The three day festival of Diwali began on Nov 10th this year (2023) with Dhanteras in honor of God Dhanvantari, the physician of the Gods. Also this is the day when Goddess Lakshmi is believed to have appeared from the ocean of milk during the churning of the ocean. Hence she is also worshipped.

Typically followers buy gold or silver on this day to celebrate the occasion. This year I bought this beautiful necklace with small hanging earrings for the festival. Not gold, but filled with precious stones and silver.
