Holidays & Observances: Nagula Chavathi

For all the posts in this Holidays & Observances series, go here.

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. šŸ™‚

The second festival of the year where Naga Devatas (= Serpent Gods) are worshipped is Nagula Chavathi which was on Nov 17th this year (2023). This is mainly performed for the well being of the kids in one’s family. Followers keep fast on that day, perform Naga Puja (= Ritual) by offer milk and dry fruits to Sarpa Devata at the Putta (snake pits). Now-a-days not sure if there are any snakes in the pits anymore, but at least there is a Ashtanag (=eight headed cobra) statue near the pit that is worshipped as well.

Here is a picture of the festivities performed in India, courtesy of my cousin who sent me this.
