Holidays & Observances: Thanksgiving Day in US

Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. πŸ™‚

Each year on the fourth Thursday of November (Nov 23rd this year 2023), families in the United States gather to celebrate Thanksgiving. It was originally intended as a day of prayer and gratitude – not just for good harvests but for a leader’s good health or success in battle.

The first Thanksgiving in America was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in November 1621. This feast lasted three days and was attended by 90 Native American Wampanoag people and 53 survivors of the Mayflower (Pilgrims).

I had a mini-Friendsgiving to celebrate Thanksgiving. And we had a potluck vegetarian feast and beautiful fall dΓ©cor to add more charm. πŸ™‚
