Two Sylvias Press Advent Calendar challenge: Day 4

For all the poems in this Two Sylvias Press Advent Calendar challenge for 2023, visit my musings here.

Prologue: This is a 31 day event that helps poets and authors all over to pen down 31 new poems in the month of December (2023). Every day we can open the calendar for that day to read about the prompt for that day. Then let your imagination fly to infinity with your thoughts and voice.

For Day 4 the Prompt given to us was to write about a meal or a unique adventure with a surrealist artist. We were asked not to edit too much either.

I am always fascinated about Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings, an Indian artist famous for his lithographs, his depictions of religious Hindu deities and realism. And I wondered how I will talk to him if I meet him in real. Here is my take on the unedited version of a beautiful evening walk with him.

Prompt 4: Evening Walk with Ravi Varma

His paintings take me always back to the
Mythological world giving me glimpses
Into a fantasy world that can only one imagine.

Walking beside Ravi Varma; and expressing my views
On his paintings landed us into a discussion between
Mythology and history; an age-old argument.

He took me thru the lives of several leading ladies
Of the epics Mahbharatha, Ramayana and Bhagvadgita.
We met Shankuntala, Damayanti, Lord Krishna’s mother Yashoda,
Ahalya, Menaka, Tilottama, Rambha and Draupadi.

He showed me the intricacies woven into these epics
Through his art depicting stories of Lord Krishna, Lord Rama,
Kauravas, Pandavas, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu
And the supreme Goddess Durga.

A mesmerizing walk into these lands pulled me into
His version of mythology; a version that appealed
To me more than before by the time we reached the destination.
