Two Sylvias Press Advent Calendar challenge: Day 10

For all the poems in this Two Sylvias Press Advent Calendar challenge for 2023, visit my musings here.

Prologue: This is a 31 day event that helps poets and authors all over to pen down 31 new poems in the month of December (2023). Every day we can open the calendar for that day to read about the prompt for that day. Then let your imagination fly to infinity with your thoughts and voice.

For Day 10 the Prompt given to us was to write a poem about any dance fad like macarena, disco etc. I couldn’t understand how to include a rhythmic refrain though. Anyways, here is my version.

Prompt 10: Girls Like To Swing to The Charleston

Faint tunes of Jazz floated by as I walked the beach
The full moon showering its light on me as I move
To the peppy beat vibrating in the air to reach
Me as I put toes in, heels out twisting steps and groove

I pondered over the forgotten Juba dance or hambone,
Predecessor to Charleston, brought in by the enslaved
In the 1800s. Dancing and singing on the plantations
Forgetting their perils and danger of being shackled.

Now I just like to swing to modern Charleston
Moving closer to the floating tunes; increasing speed;
Pouring my thoughts into various stories of passion
And rich history as it followed onto the silver screen.
