Prologue: This is a 31 day event that helps poets and authors all over to pen down 31 new poems in the month of December (2023). Every day we can open the calendar for that day to read about the prompt for that day. Then let your imagination fly to infinity with your thoughts and voice.
For Day 28 the Prompt given to us was to write a poem about a Shadow that lost its owner; laments about the concept of loss. I took a different approach. The prompt reminded me of Shadow Rider series by paranormal romance novelist Christine Feehan. Mine is a more positive spin of how a shadow becomes your own and comes to your aid.
Prompt 28: Lurking Shadows
A tube of hollow so dark beckons him to follow
He looks for his brother before letting him swallow
Into the tunnels of pitch-dark black shadow
To reach the opening of a water flooded grotto.
Astonished at the jewels embedded on the walls
Of the caves; He culls the stones with his pick
Unaware of the perils adorning coveralls
Waiting to pounce; hammer with the stick.
Shadow comes to his rescue as the peril jumps
On to him; He slips into the black crater
Grasping at the tiny jewels his hand clamps
Taking him back to his haven; his waiting brother.
