Leafing Through Pages – The Passenger

Stars: 3 / 5

Recommendation: Definitely filled with fantasy, Supernatural element tied to the tale, this was interesting to read. Two lonely strangers are helped along the way in a world exclusively chosen for them, a world they enter unknowing and come out finding themselves, finding love and above all else shedding the loneliness.

J.D. Robb along with three other authors published an anthology titled Bump In The Night in March of 2006. I posted J.D. Robb’s novella Haunted in Death that came as part of this book, and is the fourth novella in her In Death Series.

The third novella in the book was by Ruth Ryan Langan titles The Passenger.

Ruth also  dedicates the book to her three co-authors in the anthology. Again it has a fantasy to the story and bit of magic, buy not edging into spooky world. Josh Cramer, an adventure enthusiast athlete and Grace Marin, a photojournalist; who essentially live their lives to the fullest yet feel lonely as ever. A fantasy or magic brings them together showing them what life could be like together. But when reality hits, its upto them to write their own story and ending.

I felt a little sad for Josh as his agent tries to manipulate him into more adventures when all he needs is a bit of alone time. It felt like his manager was pushing him for monetary benefit as much as for Josh as much as himself. The money being the center for Josh’s manager made it sadder.

As for Grace, she was a lonely soul influenced by an unwilling father and a constant carving of the mother she never knew. Her story dint feel as much sadder but did wrench your heart.

The author connects her story to the Native American folk lore giving the fantasy part to the tale but not the spooky edge. The story again felt abruptly ended although this was more complete than Poppy’s Coin.
