Prologue: I love Nora Roberts books, well her books mostly those that she wrote prior to 2009. One of her book is the 1985 romantic novel, One Man’s Art, fourth in her longest series, The McGregor Series. The hero of the story, Grant Campbell, is a loner, rude, surly and impossible, who lives in an old lighthouse. Genevieve Grandeau literally lands on his doorstep during one particular stormy night. The story that follows between Grant and Gennie is what inspired me to look at lighthouses in a different light.
This is the fifth lighthouse that we visited was Chatham Lighthouse aka Twin Lights when it was constructed in 1808. In 1923 one of the towers was moved to the Eastham area which we know as Nauset Light since 1923. It is now part of U.S. Coast Guard and maintained by them. It was closed in January so we could not go in. Although we saw that Chatham’s landscape changes always. Pendleton tanker was rescued in 1952 when it broke in half nearing Chatham Coast. One can still see the original prop from the lifeboat used in that rescue. This lighthouse however shaped the Pilgrim history since Mayflower had a stop here in 1620.
