Recommendation:  A futuristic urban fantasy mystery thriller throwing the readers into a world that they understand as well as can envision what it would be like; and at the same time keeping it grounded to the world they know so they get hooked. A procedural case for Eve, as she doesn’t know the killers, but emulates Bonnie and Clyde from yester years. Eve find them in the end and saves the two people that are currently alive with the killers.

Devoted in Death is the forty first book in the long running In Death Series by J. D. Robb, the alter ego of the famous American romance novelist Nora Roberts. We continue to pursue Lieutenant Eve Dallas juggling her role as a Homicide Lieutenant and also being a wife to the Irish Billionaire Roarke. This was published in September of 2015.

The stories in the In Death Series are set in mid-21st century New York City, New York in United States, featuring NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke, an Irish billionaire, CEO of Roarke Industries, and one of the richest man in the world. First started in 1995, as of September 2025, 61 books have been written in this series so far. The first book begins in the year 2058 and showcases that technology completely dominates the world, yet Robb has her main characters still believe in human impulses, passion and emotions that are key to solving every single case she comes across or in her relationships with her husband and people. They complete their two years of marriage in Indulgence in Death (#31).

We are in the first week of Januray of 2061  – a good 66 years ahead for when the series began in 1995 – and Lieutenant Eve Dallas hunts down a pair of killers on killing spree across the nation. Emulating Bonnie and Clyde, these two killers kill for fun and Eve is there to stop them and rescue their latest victim, a young girl.

Dr. Mira muses on the last day of 2060 when Eve and her cops came nearly close to death in Obsession in Death (In Death #40). Trueheart takes his Detective exam and passes with flying colors as expected in Calculated in Death (In Death #36).

Real life serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer is mentioned in this plot. Eve uses her Christmas gift from Roarke by taking a class in the new dojo room holographically with Master Lu who first we saw in Survivor in Death (In Death #20).

Nadine also looks for a new property as the near miss with the killer has shaken her and scared her from Obsession in Death (In Death #40). It is every bit as good as the first one, though Robb has come to 62 books, although I have read only 41 so far.

It is little gorier than past few books, especially when Robb describes what the killers do to their victims, all in the name of sex, ugly romance and evil within themselves. They think themselves as moder-day version of Bonnie and Clyde, even though they killed 13 people, while the victim count of the current killers is 29.

It’s a lot of procedure we have to get thru and read, but that is what half the cop job is about. We get to understand the procedure better this way. The process of assembling clues when you dont know the identity of the killer intrigued me a lot.

Eve Dallas mixes her proverbs, sayings etc when she speaks like Dog eats Cats instead of Dog eats Dog. She reminds me very much of Ziva David from NCIS, played by Cote de Pablo, who is a trained with Mossad and an Israeli, naturally Ziva speaks differently. Although she started to develop some people skills.

She also talks about various sayings and questions them as to why people say so. Fr Ex..it amuses her that people say “three’s a crowd” and she doesn’t think so. It also makes us think of her musings, like “you save money for rainy days” and she thinks why only we save for rainy days and not dry days.

Robb continues to show us futuristic world in the various concepts and technology that may have been unimaginable in 1995, but are much more acceptable and some available now in 2025. And perhaps in a few years we might see more of her imagination in the series come to life. Check the Spoiler Alerts below for some of them that I identified and grouped them.

Incidentally most of the futuristic world and technology innovations that the book gives the reader, Robb had mentioned them to have begun since 2023. When this series  started 1995, 2025 was 30 years ahead. However, I have started reading them in 2023 so for me some of the concepts seem very real or close to real for the way our world is heading to.

Grammatical / Character / Plot / Geographical / Historical / Mythological Errors:

The opening of the novel has two sayings by Jonathan Swift and Algernon Charles Swinburne. But it was the same in Obsession in Death (In Death #40). Not sure if the editors saw it or the stories in both books warranted them.

On Pg. 135, Line 7 from bottom, it should be “…than…”

Plot Reveals:

She gets a ski-cap and fuzzy gloves given by Mr. Dennis Mira in Festive in Death (In Death #39). She wears them in this book.

Mention of “The Groom” from Creation in Death (In Death #25) is seen in this book. Peabody also mentions McQueen who appeared in New York to Dallas (In Death #33) who numbered his victims so cops would know how many he’d done.

Morris was friends with Dorian Kuper, the victim, that bought Eve to the entire case. She thinks may be to contact Father Chale Lopez that we first saw in Salvation in Death (In Death #27)

FBI Agent Carl Zweck. He tells Eve that if she needs help in future, she got it. Will he resurface?

If Trueheart passes the Detective exam she will make him Baxter’s partner. And also has someone in mind. Would we see that person pretty soon? Trueheart passes in flying colors and gets his gold shield of Detective.

We get to see Deputy Will Banner in this book, who helps Eve in the case. He is awarded and recognized at the end of the book. Will we seen him again in future? He knows Peabody’s cousin and her husband who run a farmer’s market co-op outside if Pigeon Run in the Ozarka.

Eve and Roarke muse on buying a gift of Bella for her one year birthday.

Someone is stealing candy bars from Eve’s desk at Cop Central. Wonder who that is?

Will Summerset and Eve call truce to their animosity and get at least form a sort of bond enough to reduce their bickering?

Eve’s ongoing fight with Vending Machines continue. I don’t get why she has so much aversion to them and have no patience while they spew out benefits of the food of choice the user does. Same goes with her aversion to shopping. Never understood it. She also has a bit of aversion for being so rich and act as lady of the manor considering her husband Roarke is the richest off and on planet. She is embarrassed too to some extent.

In Portrait in Death (#16), Siobhan and Sinead’s mother was called Patricia Carney Brody, but in Fantasy in death (#30) she is called Alise Brody. Which is it?

Nadine Furst plans to write her second book “Ride the Red Horse” based on the case on Delusion in Death (#35). There is going to be video or film too much to the chagrin of Eve.

Roarke wonders that may be Lieutenant Eve Dallas needs an admin. Who would that be if ever Eve agrees to it?

Roarke created a protype of sparring droid that looks more human than a robot.

Roarke bought a village in Tuscany and mentioned that he and Eve should see the progress there next summer. Would we see a book in Tuscany soon?

McNab mentions that Roarke’s company should produce Murdering Morph Dollies based on the game Morph Dollies. Will we see that in a future book?

Summerset introduces Ivanna Liski, his lost love from past, in this book.

From Secrets in Death # 45:

Garnet has a daughter Miranda; shows interest in Morris.

Nadine is looking for an admin; Eve has someone in her mind. A past character surfaces perhaps!
