Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. š
The birth of Hindu god Lord Hanuman is celebrated as Hanuman Jayanthi and this year it was on April 6 (2023). Ardent devotee of Rama, avatar of Lord Vishnu, the Vanara (= Monkey/ape) Lord is worshipped by all Hindus as a deity with the ability to gain victory over evil and provide protection.
This festival is celebrated twice in a year – once during April-May (Chaitra Month) and once during May-June (Vaishaka Month) depending on which state you belong to India. On this day devotees recite Hanuman Chalisa 108 times and perform Homam and Aarati. Prayers are offered to the might Lord for giving one strength and protection.
