Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. š
Every year Hanuman Jayanthi is celebrated twice depending on the month – some celebrate it in the month of Chaitra (= April) and some in the month of Vaishakha (= May). For May this year (2023), it occurs on the 14th.
Lord Hanuman was an ardent devotee of Lord Rama (seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu). On this day people celebrate his birth by visiting his temple and seeking blessings. They also offer prayers, sweets and recite Hanuman Chalisa (devotional hymn in praise of Lord Hanuman), Sundara Kanda (5th book in the Hindu Epic Ramayana) and Ramayana Paath (brief summary of Ramayana).
Pictured is a small booklet of Hanuman Chalisa that I carry with me always whether I read it or not. š
